Studying with chronical illnesses and disabilities

Experience shows that studying with a disability or a chronical illness is with regard to convenient study- and life conditions at the university very lavish. Your Studentenwerk Halle endeavours together with the universities to give early and comprehensive help. This does only function optimal when you come towards us already before the beginning of your studies, for example because of an accomodation for disabled persons in a student hostel.

Common office hour with the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg

Prior appointment, once a week every Monday from 2 pm til 3 pm there is a common office hour of the representative of the disabled of the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg and your Studentenwerk in the disabled deputizing of the University Halle, Barfüßerstr. 17, 06108 Halle(Saale).

Please make your appointment via e-mail at c.stolz@studentenwerk-halle.de.

In case you receive BAföG:

There are also special features to consider when purchasing BAföG in the case of chronic diseases or disabilities:

  • The so-called hardship allowance is the granting of an additional allowance from the income of the parent or spouse.
  • In the case of disability, the Office for the Promotion of Formation may, at the request of the applicant, permit the submission of the certificate of achievement, which normally has to be completed by the end of the 4th semester at a later date.
  • In the case of a delay in the study period, for which a disability is the cause, a grant beyond the maximum funding period may be granted on request.
  • Training support is also provided for up to three months if students are unable to attend training due to illness.

In all cases: Your personal situation is decisive and can only be evaluated in the social counseling directly in the BAföG office.
